Never give in humiliating!

“It’s okay not to like someone, but it is never okay to try

and degrade, humiliate, or dehumanize them.” – Cory Booker

I have known the Lawrence School Lovedale for over 25 years and professionally involved (on and off), with it since 2004.

Have witnessed many a high and low of the place and am familiar with every nook and cranny – of the school and the minds within it.

What happened on the evening of May 24, 2017 is probably the lowest and shoddiest that I have observed on the Front Lawns of the school.

I am not a Lawrencian but some of my dearest students are.

I am not a Lawrencian but some of my closest friends are.

I am not a Lawrencian but I hang my head in shame – for them.

No wonder nature is so anaesthetized there.

The trees no longer croon.

The birds no longer trill.

And, rain drops do not bop.

I was still in school on the 24th and was invited for the special dinner on the Front Lawns. The Head Mistress had called personally. She sounded odd and I knew something was wrong.

Evening came and there I was, the only ‘outsider’ or ‘guest’ as-it-were, in the midst of the gathering – Board members and the entire school staff.

The Chairman called for everyone’s attention and said that “before we go on to the order of the evening, which is eating”…….. blah blah blah,” and went on to blithely announce the HM’s resignation, as she stood next to him with her eyes glistening with tears!

After the silence most went back to their world of sucking-up to those in powers; establishing their fragile and false loyalties; gibbering away on their mobiles in cliques or individually; pretence further painting their faces; grabbing on to the food.

How could they even have an appetite??!!

All pawns on a chess board struggling shamelessly to topple somebody else and keeping their positions safe. Never Giving in!!

In the midst of all this, the Head Mistress bravely went about her responsibilities. With eyes reflecting her extreme distress she saw to it that all were being served including the sententious Board members. Later she escorted these ‘honourable’ individuals to their respective vehicles and did not return to be part of the ‘let us plan ahead and form alliances’ staff of Lawrence School Lovedale.

Now, this was on the cards for some time and I am not debating the reason she resigned or was asked to. I am not even questioning the decision of the Board. But, there are better ways to make such announcements. Absolute disaster handling by the Board. Ill timed, totally graceless and revolting.

Is this the way to treat the Head of an institute?

Is it part of the 159 years of tradition? If yes, then Lawrencians, hang your heads in shame!

To quote an OL, “Such things need to be handled with sensitivity and love, respect and honour.  Seems like these precious values are missing in people who are seated in positions of power and authority. “

To make matters more pathetic and humiliating was the following letter which went viral on social media within half-an-hour of the Chairman’s indifferent announcement. Who posted it?

Shame on you Lawrencians for bickering away and glorifying in it. Shame on all those cowardly mails.

Do you really have the guts to address pertinent issues and think beyond and above vested interests?

Why don’t you fight for Gender Rights? For example, do you have the moral fibre to let the Head Girl lead the parade?

Do you have the spine to end the fatuous and Constitutionally wrong ‘tradition’ of making students march during the National Anthem?

Do you have the courage and spunk to erase all under the ‘Ministry of HRD’ declarations? Technically each and every school in India is under the Ministry of HRD.

Do you have the fortitude to get rid of dead wood – the two-legged kind?

Do you have the clarity to see that material goods do not make for a good education?

Do you have the freedom of spirit and mind to ensure that you are not turning the school into a Gulag?

OR, are you just going to feel threatened if there is no ‘fatherly touch’ to education and never give in humiliating?

I know that there is a petition going around for the reinstating of the HM. But I think she should ignore any such overtures.

Hardly the first time that this has happened. I recall this happening to quite a few former DHMs in the past, in the time of Mr. Lahiri and Mr. Wal. The unceremonious equations between staff has been around for a while, now.
